HX20 Zoom

My HX20 at 15-20x optical zoom often shows ! warning and doesnt give a sharp pic at 2-300mtrs. 500m plus is ok!.  What is the minimum focus distance supposed to be at say 20x.  I know it will vary according to the aperture.

Hello lychnis

Because the exact calculation isn't something that can be done quickly by the majority of photographers (the exact process is explained here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5885984_calculate-focal-distance-lens-range.html) most users would normally refer to a lens range/depth of field chart as this would take into account all of the possible variables, including the aperture.

For the HX20, I would suggest taking a look at the online table which is located here:

http://www.dofmaster.com/doftable.html

This will allow you to enter various focal lengths and then get an answer for different apertures. According to the official Sony specification page, the focal length of the optical lens runs from 4.45mm to 89mm and so when you at 20x optical zoom, the lens will be at the 89mm mark. If you put this information into the table online, you can then see the 'near' and 'far' points where the object would remain in focus based upon your chosen aperture. This can also be printed out for your convenience.

If you follow the guidance in the table and you are still getting a warning message, let me know

Thanks,

Simon
