Hi Guys my farther in law has a sony rdr vx 450 the remote has stoped working on the system but can not see how to get its working is there a reset as the book says go to menu but cannot get that far

A possible way to reset it is to leave it disconnected from power for some days, so the internal battery discharge and lose the setting. If he changed the DVD command mode, it should be possible to set it on the remote: check the manual, with my recorder you have to push 1,2 or 3 and ENTER (3 should be the default)
