AR21S battery not charging / present

My problem on my AR21S was that the battery would not charge, now the power meter shows the battery as being not present, even though it is. How do I know if this is a hardware or a software fault, what tests can I run to prove it one way or the other? I would like to be sure that buying a new battery would fix the problem.

a simple way to check if this is a battery or possible hardware problem is to take your Vaio to a local stockist and ask if you can try another battery in your Vaio..
