its always like this with every portable music player, the time is measured if u never touch the controls, play it at 25% volume, dont use the backlight, and use the lowest quality atrac files. Its just a marketing con. When do you need more than 8hours anyway though? but i agree there is a big difference between 20 hours and 8, at least with the iPod they say you will get 12 hours, but in real life u get around 10, so its not exactly a massive difference there!
