completely dead screen - or is it?

I have a Vaio notebook, model PCG-9E5M.

It has suddenly stopped displaying anything at all. The screen is completely dead.

The indicator lights appear to work and it is making a faint humming sound (implying that at least a fan is working).

I have tried many times in frustration to reboot, then just one time it all worked again. I later shut the notebook down and I am now in the same, non-working, situation as before.

I did wonder whether maybe there is a switch, that detects whether the notbook is closed, and that mabe that switch is stuck.

Anyone have a clue what might be going on here? Thanks.

Can you connect it to a TV screen or another display? It could be your inverter is dying.

I connected it to a standard PC monitor, but there was nothing (just a "no signal" message).

Have you tried pressing Fn + F7 while connected to the PC Monitor? This should toggle your display to the VGA output.
