Does not recognise CD or DVD Drive

I have a Sony Vaio Desktop.

I have tried to copy stuff to blank CDs and DVDs endless for the last two years since I bought my computer and have never once succeeded. It just does not copy to them.

Often the problem is that it does not acknowledge there is a CD or DVD in the drive and asks me to insert a disk when there is already one there. At other times, I drop things to my E: drive, it does acknowledge there is one, but just puts them in the place which says 'You have files waiting to be written to the CD". I then can't transfer them further.

I have tried numerous different brands of CDs and DVDs.

Please help 😞

Hi azam and welcome to ClubVAIO.

Which Desktop Vaio do you have? Let us know so we can tell what software is loaded.

What sort of CD are you using (CD-R or CD-RW)?

You have to format CDs before you can 'Drag and Drop' files from your Vaio.

Hi azam,

You should have a program called 'Drag'n Drop CD+DVD' which should allow you to Drag and Drop files from Exlorer to CD and DVD discs. I don't have this software but I believe you have to format the discs first. This will only work for copying individual files for backup purposes.

Tell us exactly what you want to do. It is likely that you will have to buy a specialist program like Nero 7 to copy discs or make music compilations.

Have you updated the firmware for your drives? There are firmware upgrades for both your Sony DW-U14 Rewriter and your HLDS GDR-8162B DVD/CD ROM at VAIO-LINK. These are a year old but you may have missed them! Only the Sony drive can record to discs (it is probably the top one) the other is only for playing discs. It should be capable of burning at 2X.

Are you still using XP SP1 or have you upgraded to SP2?
