DVD drive problems

Afternoon all.

Tis' my first post here. Have nearly owned this laptop 2 years and though it was about time I joined as I really need some advice.
I stumped up £1,500 for this machine I am not impressed.

If I attempt to play any sort of DVD the drive and PC just dont want to know. It wont load on a blank DVD anymore than play a pre-recorded film on a For those in the UK, I brought a gadget from staples over Xmas that will convert VHS tapes to DVD.
When I load in a blank DVD disc, it spins for a while and then does nothing. No error message or anything.

I have a VGN-A317M

I have heard from a web designer I know that Sony machines only " like " sony disc's etc?

Hi nealster1972 and welcome to Club Vaio.

Check the type of drive in your A317M. It is probably the Sony DW-D56A.

This is a 'problem' drive - have a look at THIS LONG THREAD

The only success some have had in getting the drive to work again is by downloading the PFS-2 firmware from THIS WEBSITE - scroll down to Slimline DVD+/-RW drives.

Hope it works for you!!!!
