Laptop can't find external display once it is booted

My Sony laptop, model PCG-7V1M, used to be able to recognize a video projector
as soon as the projector was connected. Now, it does not, in spite of all the changes
I have made to screen resolution and the use of the F7 key: it obstinately refuses to see an external display. If I go via mobility and try to turn on the external display that way it tries and cannot. The only way I can use my laptop for presentations, which are important for my work, is to connect the projector and then restart the computer. Autosetting of the screen resolution then occurs just after the Windows desktop appears and all is well. However, there is simply not time at many meetings to wait for the laptop to boot up, with the whole audience waiting impatiently.
How can I fix this?
