How easy is it to upgrade the RAM on a vaio laptop?

Does it have to be dony by a sony approved engineer?

If i do it myself, will this affect the warranty?

Several members have found Crucial.com a good place to purchase new RAM, as I do not know your model I can't guide you further..

Now to the warranty as there is a guide in the manual on how to change the RAM, I would say no it would not void your warranty, however to be safe if you need to make a warranty claim simply remove the new RAM before contacting Sony..
