Resolution changes when I play a video on My Sony Vaio SVL241A12M

When I play a video on my My Sony Vaio SVL241A12M, the resolution changes. The video looks ok, but when I exit the video my screen is wrong for using word or email etc. Any ideas how I can stop this happening.

What's the current OS you're using? Maybe I can look this up for you. Also,  could you let us know the application you're using for video playback?
