SONY NOTEBOOK VGN-A497XP, VGN-AR21S,VGN-AR390E

HI, I am having a serious problem about CD/DVD rom drive. I have VGN-A497XP notebook, and when i try to play DVD movies,or dual layer dvd disk , it does not play or function( doesn't work) and i have updated my firm wire version.My dvd rom drive is:

SONY DVD RW DW-D56A updated to PFS3 from vaio-link support webpage.

SO please help me!! I am really upset with sony, I thought that sony is best maker of notebooks/laptops and i am thinking to buy " VGN-AR21S " or " VGN-AR390E " within this week. But i am very afraid maybe CD/DVD rom - Blu-ray disc will have a problem also just like this one i am having at the moment ( VGN-A497XP)

Hi bobby201 and welcome to the forum.

I’m afraid that the DW-D56A (Matshita) has proved to be a real donkey of an optical drive, as a search of this forum will reveal. However have a look at this thread to see if you can find a solution.

Blu-ray is in its infancy and also seems to be experiencing problems, judging from posts on this forum ….

Have you considered the FE series?
