Strange Wireless Issue

Hi.

I tried to use the search feature but even the word "wireless" yields no results. Pephaps i'm doing something wrong!

Anyway, i'm connected to my wireless network. I connect to networks at home, in the office, at airports - no problems, until recently.

I have a VGN-AR21S. I keep getting disconnected from the network for no apparent reason. The only way to reconnect to the network is to go to the Network Connections folder and disable the wireless network connection and then immediately enable it again. This happens regularly. I think the longest i have been connected for is 10 minutes, yet it used to connect to the same network all day every day until about 2 weeks ago.

I have tried allowing the windows software to control the wireless adapter, but i have exactly the same problems. There's nothing wrong with the router or the network, as there are 3 or 4 other laptop users in the near vicinity who are connected all day.

If i leave the laptop alone it doesnt attempt to reconnect automatically...

I have tried disabling all other network connections but there's no difference.

Any ideas?

p.s. it took me 3 minutes to write this email and i was disconnected twice.

I had the same problem and it seems that I have solved it by downloading the latest wireless lan driver from here:

See also this thread, where other vaio users discuss the same problem:

thank you for your input.

I have 2 additions to make to my original post:

1. I am running XP not Vista.
2. If i keep the connection busy by listening to say internet radio, then i do not get disconnected every few minutes. Therefore, is this issue related to power management, whereby the wireless adapter switches off as soon as the connection sits there for a minute or two without activity? MY settings are "Vaio optimized".

Hi willcox,

1. Intel® PRO/Wireless Drivers-Only for Windows* XP [V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.ZIP] (Driver=Download No2).

2. You can try going to Device Manager and expand Network Adaptters. Right-click on your Wireless Adapter and choose Properties. Under Power Management (or Advanced - I can't remember) see if there is an option for the system to turn the device off to save power. If there is then uncheck it.

Attached and highlighted is the box that needs to be unchecked.

[Edit]...

another thing to check is:

Start -> Type "power options" -> Click "Change Plan Settings" on the power plan you have activated. -> Click "Change Advanced power settings" -> Scroll down to "Wireless adaptors" and expand the selection. Set these to "Maximium performance" if they aren't already.

Thank you. I did just check the power options and sadly the option to save power was not checked.

Currently downloading the drivers. I hope it works!

Hi Matt.

Thanks for the screenshots. I have downloaded the drivers and i've been connected for 4 minutes now and i havent been disconnected yet!

I've tried to follow your second point but when i click "start" i'm not able to type anything. I only have XP, so perhaps that's why!

Wireless Switch Setting Utility insure (Windows Vista)

Hi,

I’m encountering a few problems with this software (ver.3.5.00.11270).
Every time I lock my notebook (AR11M, Vista Home Premium express upgrade) I got WiFi disconnected when unlock the user.

This also happens when I switch users.

I’m sure this software is the cause of the problem, because the disconnection only happens if WiFi Switch Setting Utility is running. If I close the software there isn’t disconnection problem when switch users or lock/unlock the computer.

Any solution to this? If I uninstall this software has another way to keep the Bluetooth off and turn on easily when needed?

Thanks in advance.

This is the problem that many people have been finding resently. Here is a microsoft update that sorts out the issue. It has worked for me so far.

Not sure there is a way of turning the bluetooth on and off without the wireless switch. The advice is to keep it off when using the wireless but i leave it on and i haven't had any problems so you could keep it on and stop the switch from running at startup. This can be done through task scheduler.
