vaio hard drive capacity

hi there,

this may be a kinda stupid question but i´ll post it anyway:

i recently bought a vgn-a215m which is supposed to have a 60gb hard disk drive. however, if i look it up in "my computer" it says that c:\ is 27.9 and d:\ is 20.9. that´s 48,8 which isn´t even remotly 60.

can anyone explain this to me? thanks, karim

It would seem that you have a hidden recovery partition in your D:\ drive. This is basically the same as a recovery CD, only you can just run it from your computer.

Are you sure there are no hidden files or anything on your D:\ drive? That sounds like a ridiculous amount to take out of a hard drive just for recovery.

It's the recovery partiton, the other thread said it had 48GB too.

Hallo

My VAIO PCG-FR315S have 60 GB Harddisk too.

But this is fake.

You have only 60GB when the drive is unformated
------------------------------>(Harddisk is empty).

Formating your Harddisk (like NTFS5 or FAT32) and capacity goes down

Don't forgett the Clustersize : NTFS5 like 4 KB Clustersize
(Harddisk with max. 2TB Volume)
Fat32 like 8KB Clustersize by max. 16GB Harddisk
Higher the Clustersizer and you lost Harddiskcapacity.
(Fat32 with 16KB Clustersize---------> max. 32GB)

(That's not interesting for NTFS5, but larger Haddisk --------------------------------> more Bytes are unused.

I have forgott the MFT (like NTFS5)

The MFT saved all positions of data on your Harddisk .
And the MFT used 12,5 % (standard)from the patition on your Harddisk.

You can't save an 5GB-file on a 5GB Harddisk!

Don't forgett them.

Good info Seb, but in the case of recovery partitions they are hidden altogether. So your total available hard drive size shows up as less than it should be. For stuff like MFT or general Windows excess, it shows up as space used.

OK

but I don't use 2 partitons from the Recover-DVD
When I recovered my Computer , I formating the harddisk self
with an partitions-tool (from a bootable floppydisk).
