Hi John,

I suspect, and I must emphasise that this a guess based on the information you have provided, that you have a graphics card connection problem. I base this on the fact that all seems to work OK when the machine is warm but once cooled the problem starts. This would possibly indicate that the solder connections on the graphics chip to motherboard are dry/failing – I have seen reports of this on the same and similar VGN-AR models.

If this is the case a ‘reflow’ of the solder should cure the problem. If you Google this (VGN-AR graphics reflow or just graphics chip reflow) you will find plenty of companies offering this service. I suggest that you go for one that offers a fix or no fee option – cost should be approx. £100+. You will also find plenty of DIY solutions but I suggest you avoid these like the plague unless you are in need of a doorstop.
