White background on SONY Clie handheld screen

The white background on my Sony CLIE screen has disappeared making it impossible for me to read anything on the display.

The battery is fully charged.

Would anybody advise me whether this is a hardware problem or has to do with a setting.

Backlight has been turned off - press down and hold the power button, this will turn it back on again.
