XL201 - How much RAM supports?

Hi all,

Sony say 3GB, but crucial.com say 4.

What is the truth?

I would go with crucial as they guarantee the RAM's compatibility

So have you installed 4GB?

It's 3Gb in the userguide available from Club Vaio. Last week Crucial didn't even recognise the VGX-XLxxx series on their search tool, so don't trust them! 😉

3GB max for sure.

Thanks Chalky,

I bought 2x1GB.

What is the truth?

The truth is that Windows XP and Vista (32bit) can only use 3GB and a little bit more. No problem, to put a 1GB module into each of the 4 memory slots.
If you want to save money, put 1 x 1GB and 1 x 512MB module into each memory bank. That gives you the maximum of 3GB and provides dual channel memory access.

Thanks FHB,
I installed 2x1GB on the empty slots.
So, my configuration is 512-1-512-1
it might providing dual channel memory access.

Hi d8b,

Crucial.com are normally spot on with there Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool..

However I am unable to find any reference to the VGX-XL series on their site..

Hi Thalamus,

adding 2GB in my opinion is the best solution.

Otherwise you have to remove the 512MB dimms.
