Surround sound thru HDMI

I use my Vaio laptop to view BluRay movies on our Bravia television.

The laptop is connected using an HDMI cable to the TV.

There is an optical audio cable connecting the Bravia to my Sony surround system.

The sound I get on the surround however is only stereo, not 5.1.

Is this normal?

I hoped that when I connect the optical out on the Bravia to the surround, the TV would send the

surround sound it gets on the HDMI input, to the optical out.

You did not give as model of suround system but I will chose Dolby surround or Dolby Digital option in Your surround system.

Hi you also need to check if your TV can pass on 5.1 signals recieved by the HDMI socket.
