I have a KD-49XE8077 model Android TV, and wanted to use with bluetooth headphones, when the children are asleep.

Can anyone confirm if this is possible, and if so which headphones do you use? I ask as I have tried to sync a pair without success. And not clear from the help data if my TV only has bluetooth for the remote, or I can add other devices such as headphones.

It does have the option add device, though looking through some info, I do not think my model allows for headphone connectivity.

To connect Bluetooth headphones, the TV must support the A2DP Bluetooth profile. Your TV does not support this profile. As a work-a-round you could consider buying a Bluetooth adapter that connects to your Optical or headphone jack sockets.
