Perhaps every two years in my case! Assuming that you haven’t bought cheap counterfeit batteries and you are still within warranty then I would get it replaced by returning it to your retailer or Sony.

https://services.sony.co.uk/supportmvc/en/Contact/Email

Use only Alkaline batteries and avoid the two big names of Energizer and Duracell as these two are widely recognised in the trade as being poor with regard to leakage.

GP (Gold Peak), Kodak, Panasonic and Sony brands have given least problems (try Poundland and Home Bargains in the UK).

Clean the battery contacts in your remote with a cotton bud moistened with alcohol (such as Isopropanol). As a last resort moisten a bud with a tiny amount of WD40 and rub the contacts with that. If there are any white deposits or corrosion on the terminals in the remote then this is partly the cause of your problem (and has been caused by poor quality batteries).

Mooly01. Thank you for reply. Agree regarding batteries & terminal
Sony have been helpful and responded positively buy ordering a new remote
