I don't really know how accurate are those information since manufacturer do not disclaim officially them. That was only a speculation as they seems different (also if I remember well in ram specification...)

Sony recently announced that they have no plans on updating BRAVIAs based on ATV2/ATV3 (MediaTek MT5891) to Android TV 9.0 Pie. This includes most models from 2017 and 2018 (like the famous X900E and X900F) and also some from 2019 (like the AG8 OLED). Find more about the matter here. It is really time we get active!

A week ago I purchased the KD- 43XG80305BU from John Lewis in Cardiff, still have issues with the satellite setting up and HDMI working to other devices with HDMI ... So I certainly hope I have at least a few years of SONY BACK-UP, as it's my first time of a Sony TV, always been Panasonic TV with no regrets ...

Sony answered on reddit. It looks like they can't get Pie working fine on ATV2, an OS with primary focus on slow processors. With other words, Oreo will be the last Android TV version for ATV2, including several models from 2019 (like XG80 or AG8). Well done Sony management!

Seems remarkable this can happen but unfortunately once a manufacturer sells a TV they make no further money from that device and have no incentive to support it other than for warranty purposes. I bet if they earnt some money from data or adverts like Google does then they'd be making sure their products lasted a bit longer on the software / hardware front.

Hell, I'd even consider a sensible ongoing software subscription to Sony if it meant they'd design things to be a bit more future proof and provided ongoing support for apps for the next 5 years.

Read the thread on reddit. You will find statements from an official Sony sales manager. You are probably right. AG8 has been released with Nougat. So one major update. But that‘s it.

Please I trust you better than this. How can you imagine that sony will make a statement about their own tv roadmap by posting onto reddit?

I do not says that this could be their view but pie is not still rolled out onto the us and we are already seeing a lot of post like "oh my God it is worst than oreo they already blocked the rollout onto oled tv and I cannot even rollback" and "oh my god they don't plan to release it to my good old tv the pie version that I really wanted to have since 4 years ago!"

I would like to have pie onto my own A1 because I love tech but I won't kill my self for it

Sorry, but that's the view of a Sony fanboy.

The media actually got the same statement from Sony, see comments in this article.

Concerning 2019 models from Sony... how on earth can you sell a TV based on a platform from 2016 and ship it with an OS (Nougat) from August 2017? Then they ship the Oreo update with a delay of 1.5 years and it is still buggy as hell due to it being hacked on a 3.10 kernel. And you still praise them and want to tell me that it isn't that bad? Security patch level is typically many months behind. People not doing USB updates are over a year behind. Come on... wake up!

I do not want to be sony advocate but in the article there is not a statement from sony that other tv will not receive pie.
Than it is another story if we talk about which hardware they use on which model. I see the fact that they choose the same soc for ag8 as an indication that also my old a1 will receive support for longer. But I am a fanboy.

MTK is just the worst of all, total offender when it comes to linux and open source.

Their HW is crap and their support is even worse than that. They are the only vendor with, what, 3 SoC models with barely any significant performance difference in 4 years. How hard it is to build all the blobs for newer kernel???

But SONY doesn't care, Philips doesn't care, google doesn't care and most of all majority of end users don't care because their SD channel looks great in vivid mode.

So..... buy and forget. Long live e-waste.

Philips at least updated MT5890 to Oreo. Sony did not.

BTW Sony had to withdraw the Pie FW for MT5893.

Philips supporting the older platform doesn't seem so true (even if they provided also an hw upgrade that I should admit is a good thing) https://toengel.net/philipsblog/2019/04/23/philips-neue-firmware-fuer-2014-2015-2016-2017er-tvs-mit-android-tv-8-oreo-qm163e-26-39/

And looking at the few blogs from philips owner it doesn't seem that Philips' Android implementation is any better than Sony (even CEC standard feature seems missing...)

@kinggo01 Mediateck chip are in practice the only SoC available for TVs. If you have in mind the power of other such as snapdragon keep in mind that they are worthy only for smartphone.

I know that mediatrash is the only SoC that is used on TV sets. And as much as I don't like them as a company for various reasons it seems that none of the partners from AndroidTV alliance is bothered with the fact that supplier, the only one, of the main part of their product suck and makes almost impossible for them to provide updates and bug fixes. And that's what actually bothers me the most. All of them are with them since the beginning and nothing has changed in that regard. While in smartphone scene thing have change for the better, when it comes to TVs it the same sad story like it was 4 years ago.

There are plenty of different TV platform out there (ops if I remember well none will support any major upgrade release year after year, but it doesn't matter)

If I can give you also my point of you on the market, I think we should think about also the fact that a premium smartphone costs some 1.000 Euro for a 6" display while a premium OLED 55" can be bought now for almost the same price...

How is end user supposed to provide a solution??? All we can do is point what's wrong and broken. And then those who can change something do nothing but ignore us. I'm not saying don't use mediatek (would be nice but not realistic for many reasons I'm aware of) but I'm saying push mediatek to support newer kernels and standard android APIs and other industry standards.

With ATV1 we all complained about lack of RAM and storage. 4 years down the road and our TVs still have RAM/ROM specs worse than 50€ phone. So, while 12GB of RAM is utterly pointless, the same goes for 2GB. Don't tell me that in 4 years they couldn't reach at least 4GB as standard with at least 32GB of storage. How complicated it is to add something that is phisicaly the same size and is supported by SoC.

Lack of any initiative to change the plaform for the better is what ***** me of more than the state that it is currently in.

Check out changelog for Philips PUS7101, see here. This TV is based on MT5890. Philips indeed used other chipsets as well which do not get the update. MT5890 does. Not on Sony...

@Kuschelmonschter I had sometimes to investigated since this intrigued me, and it looks like PUS7101 (of which they should have sold two since there is no comment on the internet about it...= should have some hybrid versione of MT5890. If you look at the specification compared i.e to sony XD85 it has a quadcore vs dualcore SoC . So this could explain why it was supported by Philips and not by Sony (that later that year switched to MT5891 while philips no)
