Having a bad time with my new TV. Recently purchased KD48A9. The first TV was exchanged because of a fault but the picture itself was fantastic. The new set is so much darker. I tried watching a film in Netflix calibrated mode and it was impossible to watch as it was so dark. I could not even see the white printing on the screen on the left-hand side. Has anyone else had this problem with Netflix calibrated mode? I am so disappointed.

In recent years it seems that films are often created in low light, for example a room is lite with a couple of lamps, so everyone is walking about in a dark home, nothing like in reality where they would be able to see each other clearly, so it is difficult to view what the hell is going on, usually I just have to guess. This is not just a problem with Netflix, but with all channels. Hence the reason I have to overdrive the set just to get a proper picture. I was an early adopter of OLED and the application by Sony is a disgrace for an expensive smart tv.

You are right. Things are okay with studio lighting or outside scenes but some films are poor, particularly indoor scenes and this is also the same when I watch through my Sky box. I couldn’t believe it when I tried Netflix Calibrated mode when “trying” to watch a film on Netflix. The calibrated mode is now permanently switched off. I am going to try to adjust my picture settings on Custom as I understand I can try out settings and will not mess up other settings. Is this right. Thank you again for helping me.

i think it goes just like on lcd: light sensor off, black level 50,black adjudst off,adv contr enhancer off, color expert 1,live color off ,realitty cretion off or auto if you preffer that way, random noise and digital noise off, smooth gradation low.for the rest, use default,or just as you like!

My point is the Netflix is still liw quality. In Romania it's just 15.25mb/s on a 4k movie.same movie looks amazing if downloaded just as it is on a blu ray,30-40gb.I use x800 to play them from ssd,but that's not the point,it's just streaming, quality is low

I know, but you get stress even when you invest thousands! Your netflix should go up at least to 1080p for and 2160p when you play a 4k movie.I get 8mb/s in 1080p and 15.25 with 4k this is still low comparing with original movie file from blu ray.I know that age is sometimes a problem, also the country you live in.I have fast internet, downloading with 40-90mb/s so 40-90gb is no problem for me if I want to download a movie! My advice, try once,a 1080p movie full blu ray from a torrent site.it's the largest file in the BDMV folder, and it should have 25-40gb and I'm sure you'll understand me.Try to diwnload a mivie that you have on netflix, just to compare! These tv's are way better than cable (at least in Romania) and streaming services. The resolution is there, but the data...is low! Found that the standard video player on sony just plays everything perfect.stress??? Yes,hdd sometimea can't keep up with the amount of data that has to be read, that's why I use an ssd...or just go with a usb 3.0 flash drive!I use sony x800 to play everything but I watch a lot if movies,I'm at over 1830 titles so you can say I'm after quality in the first place!

Hi,

I agree with @AndyLupescu on this as the low bitrate means the picture isn't as clear as it can be even if the resolution is high. But there should be a limit to how "bad" the picture quality is. This is why I suggested uploading some pictures of the same film both with Netflix mode off and on to be able to compare them and see if the change is within a reasonable limit or if it's a problem that requires intervention.

Win_88

Sorry to join this late. I’ve had the same issues with hdr/Dolby vision as other users with Netflix hdr being dark. I have a kd xf9005 and str dn-1080 receiver. Having played with the picture settings I have found that setting brightness to max and contrast around 95-98 as an initial setting and then setting gamma at +2 which pulls out details in the mid-tones with black level at 50-51 with auto dimming and x-tended dynamic range both on high. These settings seem to bring the picture to an acceptable standard while retaining the black levels. Hope this helps anyone out there having similar problems.
