This is not the answer. When roaming using other phones the name of the network and type of network will be displayed. This is important because I am with the 3 network in the UK and we can roam for free in certain countries, but have to use certain networks. For example in the USA in need to be on At&t or t-mobile. With the Xperia I only see the "R " and no information about what network. This is very frustrating. As i am worried I may be connected to the wrong network and will be charged. Please fix this.

You should need to enable data roaming to enable Internet when you are roaming. Check under settings > more > mobile network > data roaming.

The phone will always show that R while roaming. If you should have access to your service providers network I would advice you to contact your service provider to see if they can answer why you phone is roaming when it should find their network.
