Wallpapers for themes that I have downloaded aren't visible leaving me with a black wallpaper.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

I would suggest that you first of all try to clear data for the theme you have selected under settings > apps > tap the theme > clear data. Restart the phone and see if you still experience black screen.
