So all in all the addition of 'trusted voice' for 'ok google' on android isn't worth the memory it uses?

I have been trying to get 'ok google' to work so I can send messages via a scala headset. It is a trusted device so the phone is unlocked anyway do it works fine but in the process I have trained my voice to be able to unlock the phone. It works perfect if the phone is locked as long as the screen is illumnated, so locked plus illiminated 'ok google' unlocks the phone, but locked plus black screen and it doesn't respond.

Any work arounds??

TIA

As @uliwooly says, unfortunately there is no workaround for this, to keep the voice detection on while screen is off would seriously hinder battery life and could also unlock without wanting too
