Android 7. No Cyrillic alphabet on the dialer buttons.

Hi all

I bought my Sony X Compact in Ukraine and on the android 6 I had cyrillic alphabet on the buttons in the dialer. After updating to the android 7 the dialer lost theese characters. Aslo the search doesn't work for cyrillic contacts. It's disgusting and I'm not able to use my phone of full value. How to enable cyrillic in the sony's dialer? By the way I tried factory reset and it didn't help. Is it a problem with the firmware?

did you try to look at your language and input settings?

settings>languange and input., try to check if your language is properly configured

input languages are: Russian and Polish. The problem is that I had android 6 and what I just did - agreed to update my phone over the air to the 7th version. So I recieved the phone with all my apps and settings but with android 7. But in the dialer it losted cyrillic alphabet. So I thought it was a bug because of updating without reseting the user data and that's why I made factory reset and unfortunately the issue is still here

Hi @maxdiland,

I was able to replicate this. It's not showing the letters below the numbers in Cyrillic alphabet, it's shown in Roman alphabet and is not changing (or showing both) if I switch between English and Russian.

I can see how this be can very useful to have it shown in Cyrillic alphabet so I will forward this information as user feedback.

I have received some more information regarding this.

You may find that the Cyrillic letters on the Phone app’s dial pad are missing even if you have chosen a language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet, such as Russian. This is because the function “Smart search” was removed for the Cyrillic alphabet in the Android™ 7.0 update.

I understand that this does not bring the feature back, but at least you know why it's not there anymore.

Today I received the OTA update to 7.1.1. And no cyrillic alphabet on the dialer buttons again. So as I understand Sony will never return back cyrilic buttons to the dealer? I loved android becuse of very convenient dialer (unlike to the iPhone) but now I suffer more than a half of year because of unusable dealer. I am very-very sad about that. I have checked my friend's samsung and there are cyrilic symbols and search works well. I'm planning to update my phone in september-october but looks like I will be forced to buy something else, not sony

Hi again @maxdiland, sorry for the late reply, I have been out of office due to vacation.

I fully understand what you mean and I can see how good of a feature this is for non-Latin languages.

I'm afraid that there are currently no plan to re-implement non-Latin alphabets on the Phone app’s dial pad, though no final decision has been made.

Have you taken a look in the Google Play store and checked if there is another dialer that you can download that have this feature? If you haven't, I'd recommend that you do that.

I will also forward your feedback internally!

I am also very sad because of no Cyrillic on the dialler. And i installed other dialer from Google play. But it looks like a crutch. Samsung looks better, than XZ1 with the crutch.

Hi @No_in_streams, welcome to our forum and I understand your frustration.

I have forwarded the information from the other users and I will gladly forward it for you as well as I understand that it is very convenient to able to search contacts using the Cyrillic alphabet directly in the dialer.

If you find a dialer that you are happy with and would recommend to the other users in this thread, feel free to leave a link to it!

Sony, not having cirillix caractets is a shame and a big step back. Now im not able to search directly thrue phone book because names in there are in cirillic. This is not the first time that we loose this feature after sw update. How hard is to implement cirilic letters in dile pad, SONY???? I used to thing you can do everything. May be i,ll also switch to samsung next time. I hate you

The information that I have available regarding this is because because the function “Smart search” was removed for the Cyrillic alphabet in the Android 7.0 update.

If you take a look at my previous posts in this thread, this feature has been removed for non-Latin alphabets in the Android 7.0 update.

You can of course try downloading a different dialer application, as @Strampke suggested!

Now I have a Sony Xperia XZ Premium phone - here I have a problem (((

I use Sony Phone 10.0 by Sony Mobile Communications. Here I want English & Cyrillic alphabet on the dialer buttons. Help me!

Goto keyboard & languages, add Russian or other desired language as primary language and you're done.
