Is it possible to set the a6400 to activate focus just before the shutter fires during self-timer mode, rather than having to focus on 'something' when pressing the shutter button? For instance if I want to take a self-portrait in front of distant scenery, and I want the camera to focus on me, no matter what distance I happen to stand in front of it after pressing the shutter button.

I don't think this is possible. As far as I am aware, the only way you can adjust the image is before shooting not before the shutter fires. I'd recommend having a look here: https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1810/v1/en/contents/TP0002241223.html?search=self%20timer

Thanks for confirming.

It's annoying because I'll have to continue to use my old compact Panasonic TZ40 for self-timer self-portraits if I want properly exposed and focused photos of myself in scenic locations - it focuses (and exposes for what it's focusing on) just before the shutter fires when it's set in self-timer mode.

I hope Sony will provide this feature in one of its settings in a future upgraded version of the alpha.

This is absolutely retarded. Why on earth would they purposefully prohibit their costumers from taking self portraits? It makes me want to sell my Sony because of this.
