MC2000e audio issues

I have an HXR-MC20003. There are three things I do not understand the answers to which do not appear in the provided manual or operating guide -

1. how do I monitor sound level during recording? I would expect to see an image box displaying the audio input but cannot see if there is one or how to get it onto the display?

2. How do I adjust the volume 'input' level?

3. The Sony supplied mic input is labelled powered but the voltage phantom power is not specified? So I assume there is no way to use an cardoid external mic without risking damage to the mic via phantom power?

4. What exactly is a 'cold' shoe.? When I purchased the dealer said there was a hotshoe which would enable me to use one of my existing shotgun mics?

Any help would be gratefully received. Coming off the use of a Cannon which had all of the above this appears quite disappointing.

Unfortunately your HXR-MC20003 does not have an audio level meter, however I've been informed that your MC20003 does have an auto gain control system which should automatically adjusts the audio level..

It may be possible to obtain some form of third party conversion box maybe a specialist in your are can assist you further..:smileyconfused:

As far as I am aware a cold shoe does not use any of the Camera battery supply to power the attached device instead these devices are connected to the camera by use of a cable & I believe there are two cold shoes located on the front & rear of the carry handle..
