A197XP Hard Drive

Hello all,

I am looking at upgrading the 80GB 4200rpm hard drive that came with my A197XP and wondered if anyone knows of a maximum drive size that the BIOS will accomodate.

The main reason for the upgrade is that the supplied drive is just too slow for my needs. I do have a spare 60GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive, but am a little unsure if it's a good idea to put that one in due to the heat it pumps out.

I've seen a Seagate 100GB 5400rpm drive which should fit my needs, but don't want to buy one if it wont work!

I ask me, when it gives for my 2 years old VAIO a BIOS-update or upgrate from Sony.

USB boot option would be nice.
Then can make a C O M P L E T E Virus scan.

or other other funny things

I have a username, a password and I can logon.
But no e-support.

Only the possibility to register my notebook.

Harddrive: i saw a test of notebook harddrives on www.tomshardware.com, iirc the 60 GB hitachi was the fastest, but have a look on your own. do you need just more hd space or faster performance?

My opinion is more diskspace is better. (like 100GB)

And I think Hitachi/IBM harddiscs are one of the best.

Thanks for all the posts.

After NOT opening up my laptop (still under warranty), and NOT seeing the amount of space around the hard drive (there's about a 1cm gap above the drive), I decided to NOT put the 60GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive in as speed is more important to me than space, especially as I can pop the 80GB drive into a USB caddy.

And boy does the laptop fly now (very obvious speed improvement)! Although of course it doesn't. Because I didn't open it up...
