PCG-GRX415MP Upgrading memory problem

Hello,

I have a sony vaio GRX415MP model which comes with 256 MB RAM and when i have tried to install another 256 MB RAM in another slot, both the BIOS and the Windows XP dont recognise it. It reports only 256.

Now, i tried to put a new memory chip into a primary memory slot and it worked fine, but when i tried it in the second slot it ran once on 512 MB and then next time i have restarted the computer it was 256 MB again only.

Does anyone know what the cause can be ? And how to solve it if it is solvable ?

Warranty has expired by the way

I assume that if your machine recognised the extra memory at least once then your BIOS can handle it.

The GRX series, especially the older ones have a known problem with the second memory slot; on some machines this can lead to the laptop not working at all - genrally just after the warranty has expired

You could try a 512 MB stick in slot one

Have to agree Dave, sounds like the dreaded second memory slot death has reared it's ugly head

Yeah I'm happy with my GRX.
Would love an A series laptop, but I really have to pool my cash into moving out and my new home.

The A series is sweeeeeeeeeeeeetEspecially the 17" wide screen, combined with the S-Master docking station (not to be confused with the normal docking station).I have pictures, just need time to post them on here.Now we got the new topic thing going again I'll have to sort something out over the bank holiday weekend.
