I found Vista (32) unstable on my Sony VGC RT1SU, so when WIN7 (64) came along I bought it (Home Prem) and since then it has been rock solid. Until yesterday. When it started up, it said there were start up problems and sugested a repair. This worked. But today I have found the same message, but this time the start up repair stalls.

I can't get it to boot. Of course having a wireless keyboard doesn't help when trying all the other solutions I went for:

1. Booting from WIN7 64 DVD

2, Booting from Recovery disks (F10 and all that), to get back to Vista 32

3. Trying a complete new instal with a WIN7 Ulimate.

All approaches only get me so far and then the PC stalls. I have waited for an hour to see if it will eventually get there, But no, there is no HD activity, the PC appears to stall and get stuck.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I have full back ups of everything, all my orginal software and keys. My PC was protected with Zone Alarm Extreme and I did a full scan two days ago and nothing was found. Since then I have only used the PC for email and the usual stuf. No questionabale downloads.

I suspect that there might be a hardware fault.

I think you are right - it does sound like a hardware fault.

I would just take out and reseat the memory modules to eliminate a bad contact there.

Otherwise it does sound like your Hard Disc is faulty or there is a power issue and I would have a word with Vaio Support if you are still within warranty. If you are no longer in warranty, have a word with one of Sony's Service Partners. If you are in the UK have a look here: -

http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/contacts/asc.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VGC-RT1SU
