Rich
Thanks for taking the time to help a new vaio soul. Solved the problem. The problem was due to a USB hub I had installed recently. (Belkin 7port hub) As soon as I removed the drives came back and the machine speeded up. Not sure if the Hub is faulty or not set up right.
Any hoe thanks
Klem

Sometimes you can get the computer to redetect the drives by shutting down the computer completely, inserting cards into the reader, restarting the computer.

Depending on what you have plugged in, you may need to use the external power adaptor with the hub.
