Hi all,

This just started a couple of days ago but is pretty loud and really doesn't sound too good so any help would be appreciated.

I've had my Sony Vaio VGN-NR38S/S for about 18 months now and all has been working fine apart from battery issues which is a different matter. But a couple of days ago this really loud grinding noise came from within the laptop, lasted a couple of seconds and then went away and everything went back to normal. I get this sound a couple of times per day but I can't seem to recreate it on demand so I don't think it is anything in particular that I do each time.

The best way to describe the sound would be grinding or metal on metal scratching. Really not a good sound to hear.

Anyway, from having a bit of a search around I get the feeling this might be an fan (possibly the CPU fan if that uses a ball bearing system?) or the hdd.

Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks for your reply.

Shamefully no, warranty expired a good while ago or I would be sending it back for a check immediately.

The volume of the sound is what's making me think its the fan (is that even relevant?), but I'm hoping its the hdd to be honest. I keep everything backed up and buying a new hdd is pretty cheap sending the Vaio to Sony for repair is not.

It could be the fan, and the noise could be due to a build up of dust, etc.

I would suggest, if it's possible, you ask a local pc repair specialist in your area for their opinion hopefully they'll do that for free.
