Whats causing this???

Hi all,

Ive been getting these lines on my screen for a few months now. It happens someitimes on mains power, normally just after starting windows, but pretty much every time on battery power although someitmes its straight away and sometimes takes 10-15 mins. Once it has happened the laptop freezes and I have to reboot.

Any ideas?

Hi Stan.

Welcome to Club Vaio.

What model is that (I'm trying to work out which graphics chip you have).
There are two tests: -

1. Boot your Vaio into Safe mode. This does not use the Windows graphics driver. Do you get the same problem? If you do then your screen may need a repair.

2. Connect to an external display. Do you get the same problem? If you do then try updating the graphics driver but if this does not help then a graphics chip or motherboard repair may be necessary.

Hi Blencogo

Its a VGN-N11S/W

I changed the screen a while back as it got stood on! But it was doing it prior to that, and still is. It only started when my battery became unserviceable ie it would hold no charge. I have a new one now but it hasnt changed.

I'll give your suggestion a go but I think its a hardware issue, like you said in point 2.

Hi guys

I tried it in safe mode and it doesnt appear to still happen, though it was only on for about 10 mins. I rebooted and started with just the battery in and it did it almost straight away after windows booted.

So, where next?

I didnt try another screen as I dont have a lead.

PS I am also stanbates. I forgot I already had an account, sorry.
