Screen Resolution with Intel

I have the VGN-BX295VP

Im not in it for the graphics but i do a lot of business work on the laptop. But come to my surprise the highest screen resolution for this notebook is 1024x768, therefore i would prefer a higher resolution.

Is their any chance of me getting a higher screen resolution with my current video adaptor:

Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family (128 MB)

I was under the impression that a laptop screen has a native resolution which is usually the "highest" it is capable of.

Obviously you can choose lower resolutions but they can be blurry.

I also brought a Sony VGN-BX295VP, and was also surprised that the highest resolution I could get was 1024 x 768, I installed the latest Intel drivers (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=1764&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional〈=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21) for the video card, this gave me a second option in the "Display Properties" (Display Settings > Display) this second option gave me a higher resolution option however it does not actually do anything and resets itself once you hit reply.

I would really like an answer to this question, can it or can’t it be increased either by extra software or an update, any help from anyone would very much appreciated.

Hi Guys and welcome to ClubVAIO.

1024 X 768 is the number of actual pixels in your XGA screen.

It is pointless trying to set a higher resolution because the screen is incapable of displaying more pixels than it actually physically has available.

As William says, it is possible to set a LOWER resolution but not a higher one.

The Intel driver would allow you to set a higher resolution on an external monitor capable of the higher resolution.

Why have Sony made such a laptop? Surely in todays day and age screen resolutions should be minimum 1024 x 768 if anything?? Any ideas? Seem's very strange...

Hi janjx,

I'm not here to defend Sony - I am just a Vaio user like you.

That said, Sony make a range of Vaio Laptops with different specifications (and prices) targeted at different types of users.

The BX series is targeted at business users and has many useful and advanced features for businessmen who mainly use Microsoft Office Applications and connect to a business network. It also has good storage and a multifunction bay for further removable storage or DVD writer. It is also compact and uses a standard 4:3 screen.

It is also one of Sony's cheaper Vaios and there is an old saying that you get what you pay for. The 1024 X 768 TFT display is perfectly good enough for business (and most other) uses - this is the resolution of most new TVs and represents a good resolution of 87 DPI (remember you have a small 4:3 screen). Although you can get laptop screens with higher resolutions, these are usually bigger Widescreen displays and are usually on Laptops costing more than your BX Vaio.

There is obviously a good market for the BX among business users and the display is pretty good for its size. Remember resolution isn't everything and I find you get a better image on a X-black Vaio than almost any other laptop.

I suppose rather than blaming Sony for making the BX, I would ask why you bought it without checking the specifications first? Did you look at the FJ series?

Thanks for your response. Well to be honest and a mistake on my part, I just assumed that the resolution could be set to anything you want (obviously to a limit), I weren't expecting the limit to be as low as it was, as this laptop was above what I could normally afford, I went totally on Processor and HDD specs, a BAD oversight on my part, lesson learnt!

Anyway, thanks for your quick responses. Finally, may be you know the answer to this question:

Is there anyway I can make the desktop icons and fonts smaller than they are, I assumed these were controlled by the resolution of the screen, hence this post, was I correct in thinking that?

Hi Janjx,

Not sure how effective it is but you could try right-clicking on a blank part of your Windows Desktop and choosing Properties. Go to Settings -> Advanced -> General and enter a Custom Value for th DPI a bit lower than the default. (eg. 80 instead of 85)
