DSLR and compact flash cards

I have a canon 30D and plugging it in via the usb adapter cable nothing happens or recognises the compact flash storage, i have tried a multi card reader too also via the mico usb socket with usb adaper and still nothing,

do i need to tell the tablet something is there, or tell the usb socket to power such devices as a card reader,

any suggestions very welcome.

set usb communications on canon to print/ptp shud see it as a disk drive

still doesn't work, downloaded an app to monitor the usb connection and the error message was that s3c usb host driver not found or something similar, so have come to a dead end? and help anyone, thanks
