Sony Tablet P: Mobile networks SIM card problems?

I enter “Settings, Wireless & networks, Mobile networks & then Network operators”. The Tablet P searches & finds various networks including “O2 UK” (O2 is duplicated on the list for some reason). I click on “O2 UK” & message says “Registering on O2 UK”. However after the above, there is no trace of an O2 connection to select. I have used a SIM card from an O2 dongle & also an O2 SIM designed for an iPad 2. What am I doing wrong? My Wi-fi works perfectly & I have turned the wi-fi off when trying to set up the above.
