Conclusion I have found out WHY the Xperia 1 cannot handle stable 4k and stable 1080p 60fps!

OIS is better for PHOTOS

EIS better for videos

Both together DOES NOT WORK!

Those who have been following my epic quest to get to the heart of what is wrong with the Sony Xperia 1 stability ar 4k, why Sony has not rectified it and WHY it is happening-have seen many of my videos shot at 4k and on the main lens.

Today I took a different tack  and tested with the main AND WIDE angle lenses

The video shows my results and is proof as plain as day that SONY can NEVER and WILL NEVER fix this issue no matter what they do, as its hardware based.

Proof on every single test-even the wide angle procedure stability is better when set to OFF but when set to on- its TOO MUCH for Sony to process even at 1080p 60FPS.

Sony's EIS algorithm is getting WORSE as generations pass (see my XZ Premium test and XZ 3 at 4k)

PROOF and evidence that the main and telephoto lens they have both have OIS+EIS =problems, wide angle has EIS only=I NO ISSUES! So switching ON stability in the NORMAL camera app, actually creates problems and the phone above 1080p HDR cannot process it thus is rendered useless.

This has to be passed up the chain, surely.

I wrote to Sony Xperia President (you all got a copy of the email for transparancy purposes) unlike many it was not critical of Sony Xperia., rather the opposite, it was an offer of PARTNERSHIP a way of reenganging with their fan base in order to make a better product. The email was addressed politely and properly, even given the customs of doing business and the honourable way Japanese behave.

(I am lucky to verbally speak a smattering of Japanese-due to the martial arts stuff I do, I cannot read Karji characters yet so dont ask me to try:P)

I have also engaged my concerns with the excellent staff at Leeds Sony centre, who are brilliant , professional and helpful people.

Sadly Sony President and European press chose to ignore the email and not to engage with us. Again (for the benefit of our moderators) it would be helpful if Sony techs engage with us properly and personally deleting this forum would be a huge step back, we all love the Sony Brand and not just Xperia.

Sony we ask and invite you to re-engage personally with the community, the same comminuty that made your name, we DON'T want to simply make demands as other fans do we want to WORK in partnership for a better product.

There are many Sony Xperia experts here who will love (myself included) to work WITH you for the better product, its the only honourable way to achieve this.

Below everyone can find the letter I wrote to Sony Xperia President.

Sumimessen Mitsuya Kishida

Now that Sony have released the Sony Xperia II, the question that needs to remain is what about us Sony Xperia 1 users that have invested into a Sony product? I mean Sony company does not owe us any freebies just for the reason we purchased a phone from them, however they DO owe us a 4k EIS fix. We Xperia 1 users aren't asking for the world-we just feel that now that Sony have a new model out ,they should not abandon their previous work and that is to render a 4k EIS FIX in both normal and Cinema PRO camera apps.

Also to FURTHER develop Cinema Pro, such possible popular gimbal support and to liaise with companies to get this integrated !

I remember (after I won TWO  PC UK Overclocking championships) I used to work with DFI LANPARTY motherboards and we designed some of the best Overclocking motherboards on the market, EVERY FEATURE and even the BIOS (worked with the famous Oscar WU and Jarry Chang) was designed around user feedback and NOT just the experts! Sony Xperia if it wishes to win the hearts and minds of people, then it needs to adopt a similar principle.

I love the Xperia 1, however in many ways and judging by what the Mark II has, some of us feel that Xperia 1 is really a BETA to the Mark II. Moderators and possible Sony reps, what I/ and WE (judging by the feedback on here) we are not asking for anything crazy or being unreasonable, we just want you to fix the 4K EIS, as you see on many forums the 4K EIS does not work on the main Lens.

Sony can you work with us users on this please?

My original post on the Sony Forums (talk mobile is)

I have fully tested out this issue on my Sony Xperia fan channel.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOHJpCn-tU5tNRpp5Tapg8w/videos?view_as=subscriber

After all your marketing did say it had OIS, but it didn't mention that is was OIS in 1080p HDR only on the main lens.  Can we both work hard together to get this issue resolved? Remember not everyone can afford a gimbal after paying a fortune out for the phone.

So Sir

I hope sony will finally start communicate with their fans and fix this issue.

I also hope for 21:9 mode in main camera app just like cheaper xperia 10 does.

I have been very critical on what Sony is doing wrong, with regards to the 4k stability.

So in fairness and a sense of BALANCE I am now producing a VIDEO on what Sony is doing RIGHT!

From the start

How 1080p+HDR stability or lack thereof rendered it unusable-except without HDR

To now laterst firmware+ nearly a year later and sum total of progression.

What has happened with 1080p HDR stability

Standby for a fair and balanced video on this matter soon, posted in a new subject!

I'm not familiar with the details. But does Sony use its Gyroscope to help with stabilization?

Not sure mate

but if it does-it doesnt work

I was just thinking the gyro would act as a digital gimble.

I dove a little deep into it and ran into an informative white paper about "Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)" which can equate shacky to not show in photos.

https://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/white_paper/c9/a6/fd/e4/e6/4e/48/60/ois_w...

Then I ran into this hilarious article, that picks up on leaked information; miss interpreted what "Dynamic Vibration System" was going to be. Of course, this featured ended up on the Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ3 and Xperia 1. Vibration while watching a movie or listening to music.

https://sonyreconsidered.com/optical-image-stabilization-finally-coming-to-xperia-phones-in-2018-ef8...

Fast-forward, we do get OIS; optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (EIS) simultaneously on the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5

https://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/xperia1/faq/system-&-performance/801930740402ed72d016acc577...

Maybe the answer is "why the Xperia 1 cannot handle stable 4K"; 5-axis gyro-EIS is only activated for 1080p@30fps.

SOnyEISOISCapture.png

Maybe, a troubleshoot way to heighten your gyroscope sensor.

  • Go to Google Maps. Click on the dot. On the bottom, it says "Calibrate compass." Recalibrate gyroscope. Hopefully, that can fix the phone's loopiness of not knowing which way is up and down.

Nope not so

EIS doesnt kick in on the main lens, it only kicks in on EIS 1080P on WIDE angle at 4k

So to be honest no that solution does not work mate, and its NOT just my phone sadly you seem to think its just my phone.

90% of the users have the same problem at 4K

No issues at 1080p at30 fps issues @60, this tellimg me at 60fps the EIS alg cannot handle it.

Nothing at all to do with gyroscope
