Hello ladylarch - welcome to the Sony Forums

There are two picture effects on the camera that will give you a black and white shot, 'High Contrast Mono' and 'Rich Tone Mono' and they can both be found in the 'Picture Effects' menu on the A77 (Function 'Fn' Button --> Picture Effect).

There are full details of all picture modes in the A77 manual on page 144. Just in case you do not have this book to hand, here is an online version for you to browse.

Thanks,

Simon

Take them in colour and use the software to convert them to black and white.  That way you always have the colour original.

If I use the FN button there is no Picture Effect to select.

All I have is :-

Drive Mode

Flash mode

Object tracking

Face detection

Smile shutter

Try switching exposure mode to one of the non-auto settings: P A S or M (Program AE, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority or Manual exposure)

A number of functions accessed by the Fn button are not available if you have the exposure mode set to AUTO or AUTO+. Some Picture Effect options also aren't available if you have quality set to RAW.

If you check out p.144 of the Instruction Manual the options are listed, along with notes as to settings which do not permit any/all Picture Effect settings.

Cheers

Mick
