2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

TV lauches are always at CES in January with actual release a few months later.

The new phones are called Z5 because the European Z3+ was branded Z4 in Japan so in Japan it was Z3>4>5 but to us it's Z3>3+>5.

4's an unlucky number in Japan so maybe that's why they skipped it.

@orangeyred I didn't know Japan had it as a Z4. I thought there was going to be a stupid joke like Microsoft did about windows. There's no 9 because 7 ate 9.

Has SONY never used IFA announce Tv sets?

well according to Sony support the issues have been fixed for 5.1:

"

  1. This issue has been fixed in the software release (OTA5), Target date was Aug 17th.
  2. This is not an update on our website, this will be OTA (Over The Air) so: Please set 'Automatic software download' to ON in the 'System software update' tab from the' Help' menu, so that the TV will automatically find the new release when available."

I did notice that YouTube has been updated and you can now select the quality of the video, 2160P is one of the options and using the 4K video test posted a few pages back now shows the grey bar at 100% fully. Plus the NASA videos look amazing (they looked good before)

Yeah that's what they told me. Was Aug 17th. Missed that by a country mile. Now it's meant to be the end of Sep.

Hi thanks for that however when I click on video - devices it cannot find anything. How did you allow for local network sharing?

This is my 5th Sony TV set and it is nearly the worst. I already own a 2014 49 inch non Android 4k TV and it is brilliant. Therefore when I took delivery of my 2015 65 inch 4k Android TV I expected great things.  To be fair the picture quality is good , but on Netflix the sound lags the picture.  That audio return Chanel functionality simply does not work, the touch remote broke within a week of delivery, the satellite TV guide is useless because it does not indicate what show is playing on each station, even though a cheap Humax box attached to the same satellite feed carries all of that information. The TV speaker sound is far worse than the 2014 model, The sound when fed back to an AV amp via the Optical link is very feeble compared with the sound from the 2014 model, even the sound from an AppleTV box feed is better.

finally , and crucially the Sony retailer sold me this set saying that I would have the facility to pause and record live TV. that is simply not the case, why should I wait for a software upgrade simply to get a facility that was standard on the old model.

i expect to be returning this very poor item back to the Sony store very soon.

I agree nearly everything about my new Sony Android TV is awful in comparison to my existing Sony 2014 non android TV. We should all be refunded, Sony must have a commercial death wish.

I'm confused - why are they suddenly putting the updates on OTA rather than across the internet where we can get them any time?!
