Clicking/tripping/cut-off sound/noise from within the TV when turning the TV on and off

Dear all,

https://soundcloud.com/tulsi-ezhilan/sony-tv-on-off-noise/s-VPmc7

Please find above a link to the audio recording with the sound/noise that can be heard when turning on and turning off the 75" Sony TV KD-75XF8596. It sounds like a cut-off / tripping sound from the electronics. This issue has been there since Day1, and the TV was purchased recently. I have discussed this issue with the store I purchased it from, and based on few suggestions received from them, I've done some troubleshooting to establish the sound/noise is originating from inside of the TV, and not from the TV speakers (so not due to TV sound settings). Factory reset also did not help. I heard the same sound when the TV turns on and off during the factory reset also.

That TV was returned and a replacement was provided as the original TV was determined to be faulty. Disappointingly, that replacement TV also has the same issue. Either the 2nd new TV is also faulty or this sound/noise is typical of this TV size and model. Has anyone faced this issue? Please let me know your thoughts after reading the above and hearing the sound clip.

Thank you.

Hi tezhilan,

Welcome to the community.

I'll look into this for you and see if I can find out. Someone else in the community may be able to advise in the meantime.

Thanks,

Pascale

That sounds like a mechanical relay pulling in and dropping out. I would need to see a circuit diagram of the TV to both confirm and to see what its actual function was.

The fact that two TV's have the same behaviour suggests its normal.

Thanks Pascale and Mooly01.

I spoke to Sony representative in John Lewis and Currys Knowhow, and both have said that the TV shouldn't be making that noise. The fact that both TVs have made that noise is strange, probably indicating a faulty batch?

I really like the TV though. I just done want this problem to worsen over time and cause other issues...

As Mooly said it sounds like a click from a relay pulling in or out. Maybe due to the size of the screen something requires a relay (usually for higher power electronics).

My XE9005 and XG9005 both 49" don't have this but my old Panasonic plasma did have a relay noise like this when turing on and off.

You could do with seeing us other XF 75" owners have the same, or if other 75" models do the same? It might be specific to the 75".

Hi,

This seems to be pretty normal:

"This noise is simply the result of the mechanical contraction and expansion of certain parts inside your TV. This noise may be heard during playback, up to one hour after powering off, or when powering on the TV from the cold. Please be aware that this symptom is perfectly normal and cannot be remedied by Sony."

Hi Win_88

Thanks for your response. I did find that response in Sony website a while ago when I was googling about this issue. It refers to the sound made due to plastic or similar material within the TV, contracting and expanding due to thermal behaviours. And such sound are not distinct, and could happen at different times. I've heard that in some TVs.

In this case, it's a distinct audible sound/noise (link posted earlier) occurs only during On and Off. I've received mixed response so far where Sony representative in John Lewis and Currys Knowhow both have said that the TV shouldn't make that sound during on and off. And on the other hand people have said its normal. I'm awaiting for an official word from Sony to confirm one way or the other. Retailer is discussing this directly with Sony and awaiting a response.

To all - I've recently made a video clip. Link below

https://youtu.be/N8NhUnBZPPI

It's a 13sec video. 0 to 1 sec - Clicking sound when TV is turned on. 9 to 10 sec in the video - Clicking sound when TV is turned off. Noise is like opening a soda metal can.

Hopefully the video sheds more light into the issue than the audio clip link I posted earlier. Please let me know what you all think. Thanks..

Hi tezhilan ,

I totally agree with Win_88, I've listed to the sound in the video you posted on Youtube and it sounds pretty normal.

Cheers,
