I purchased a Sony KD-55X80K shortly before the World Cup to replace my 12 year old Sony Bravia KDL-40HX803.
Although the TV has superior picture quality I get awful lag and judder when watching live sports especially football.
I've tried numerous settings but to no avail. Surprised as I never had this issue with the KDL-40HX803 which was a 1080i TV. Can anyone please advise?

Which numerous settings have you tried?
Have you made sure your TVs software is up to date.

Have a look at your Picture Settings go to Motionflow and switch it off.
I always have Motionflow off.
Are you watching football via the TVs own input or via another device such as a PVR
via HDMI connection. If viewing via another device by HDMI make sure the device is plugged into
one of the (enhanced) HDMI ports, you will need to go into the TV settings and select Enhanced for that HDMI port.
Press Settings on your Remote control, go to Channels & Inputs> External Inputs> HDMI signal format.
There you can select which HDMI devices connected to your TV are in Standard or Enhanced format.
Also check the devices own settings to see if there is an option to increase or decrease the frequency
of the signal going to the TV.
As your TV is still under warranty you may want to arrange a visit by a TV engineer to have a look at the
TV to establish whether there may be a fault. If a fault is diagnosed you may be able to get a replacement.

@daveyh64I'm watching all content via my Sky Q box connected to the first HDMI input and according to the system settings I'm on the latest software revision (6.6070), same as the version indicated on the link you shared. I've tried with Motionflow switched on and off (doesn't make any difference).
I've just had a look at the settings and noticed HDMI 1 is set to standard format so I'll change to enhanced and see if it improves (will be watching footie tonight). Thanks for the advice
@LightFootThanks for the advice I'll look into that as well. Just find it strange I never had this problem on what was an inferior model.
@daveyh64massive improvement since changing HDMI to enhanced format. Still not quite 100% but lag and judder much less noticeable. I'll try with MotionFlow off the next time the football's on. Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.
