KD-55XE8596 frame stutter on 50hz content

a number of Sony TVs can't view 1080i @ 50hz correctly. XE8596, XE9005 and probably some others are affected, which you can see a huge thread at AVForums discussing it at length - https://www.avforums.com/threads/sony-xe90-frame-repeats-drops-on-50-59-94-native-content-49xe9005.2...

Sometimes a stutter can be observed as soon as the camera changes. The only workaround is to use game mode, but this is unacceptable for a premium TV as a lot of television programmes in the UK is broadcasted at 50hz. Why hasn't it been fixed? Absolutely shocking I paid £900 for a larger TV that comes with faults, when an other brand TV I purchased in 2011 for £300 does not have this issue.

I have uploaded a slow motion recording showing this, you can see it at 0:03 and 0:16 seconds.

Interesting. Rtings.com stated that it is exclusive to the XE90, see here:

That’s certainly very interesting. I was able to recreate the same frame drops and cadence issues on our 55” X900E. What’s also interesting is that it appears to be specific to the X900E (our X850E and X930E don’t appear to show the same issues).

That actually puzzled me. Judging from your report I think that it might be due to the level of post processing done by the 2017 line and the weaker X1 (non-Extreme) image processor built into XE85 and XE90.

There is also another Motionflow issue that motion interpolation does not work under specific circumstances (Cinemascope content played via apps, see here). I think that the image processor has simply been maxxed out in recent years.

Yeah I have no idea why rtings say this, I can't reply to that as they do not allow anyone outside the united states to post.

I also checked the back of the TV to make sure it's an XE85 and it is https://imgur.com/a/bWRupP7

The Japanese haven‘t arrived in the new information and communication age yet. There is also a rather big thread on German forums, see here. Actually rtings.com stated that Sony is not looking into the issue as there is a solution with the Game mode which disables some motion processing. Well that‘s today‘s Sony.

Hi there,

Sony are aware of all of the above including the proposed solution of changing picture mode to "game mode", and are currently investigating this issue.

Cheers,

Problem has first been reported to Sony beginning of November 2017, so half a year ago. This is a quote by rtings.com:

Sony explicitly told us they won’t fix the 50Hz frame drop since they mentioned it is hard to fix and there is a workaround (game mode).

Game mode is no workaround in my opinion. It disables lots of valuable video post processing.

I am not happy with this answer after half year. It is just about holding people off. New members might still fall for it. I have been a Sony customer for 2 years and know how stuff works around here...

Hi,

I have the same problem on my KDL-50W755C TV set. The problem started after the last update (Nougat). When I watch sports particularly Formula 1 (DVB-T S2 1080i @ 25Hz) the fault is constantly visible. With Motinflow on (Standard, Smooth etc.) is much worse. The "game mode" solution is a joke. First passthrough and now this.

Can the failure be included in the list: Android TV - Bugs and Issues. Tnx.

Cheers.

Was there ever an update to thi? Game mode isn't really a suitable work around as if the source is an interlaced source,  then the picture "flickers" because it appears that game mode either doesn't or struggles to de-interlace the picture. Photo modes do a slightly better job but its still a kludge.

Hi,

The latest update is that Sony UK is still investigating this issue and looking into possible solutions. Has anyone here have this issue and actually tried the game mode setting? If so, did the stutter stop completely?
