Netflix on Apple TV and 4K HDR/Dolby Vision (KD-65XF9005)

I have a new KD-65XF9005 and am struggling to get proper quality on 4K HDR and Dolby Vision from my Apple TV 4K in Netflix.

If I set my Apple TV at 4K SDR, the picture looks great in the Apple TV Netflix app, but if I change it to 4K HDR or Dolby Vision, the picture looks very dim. The Apple TV menu and Netflix menu are OK, but the content itself is dark and "washed out".

I've tried both with and without Enhanced mode on the HDMI input settings. Actually the Apple TV detects when I set it to Enhanced mode,  and asks if I want to enable Dolby Vision.

Hi steinrr,

Have you tried Netflix from the app installed on the TV? If the picture was fine on 4K HDR on the app, then it's wither the connection between the TV and the Apple TV or it's something in the settings of the Apple TV that needs to be adjusted. It would be useful too to try another HDMI cable in different ports.

Hope this helps,

I have this problem too. I have K49XF9005.

The DV automatically kicks in whether I'm on ATV or the native tv Netflix app. Dolby Vision is dark and washed out.

It's truly awful. Nothing setting wise can be changed when it does this and it seems you can't switch it off. Or is there something I'm missing? Curry's wont accept a return as I've unpacked and used the TV (for only 24hours but they still wont accept it as it's not faulty)

I have same problem with my Sony A1E and found solution.

Steps taken:

1. Play Dolby Vision movie on the native Netflix app, compare with my Note 8 play same video same time. Color and gamma seems fine.

2. Play Dolby Vision movie on ATV 4K, compare with Note 8 on HDR, notice the color and gamma is wrong. In my experience, it seems to be the RGB range issue.

So here is what I found: default setting of "HDMI range" under "video options" is auto, and it works well to detect other sources. HOWEVER, with Dolby Vision from ATV 4K, if you leave it to Auto, it will actually set as "limited", which is wrong. Change it to "FULL", will solve your DV problem.

BUT, if you set it to FULL and play non HDR video from ATV4K, you will ruin the image again. You need to change it back to "Auto" for normal videos.

It is a bug I beleive. If you have two devices that can do HDR you can easily try this.
