On start up getting Android and Bouncing Balls before TV picture

For the past 3 days my Bravia KD-65XE9005 starts with the Android / Sony Bouncing Balls logo routine with each power on after a long switch off (mainly overnight).  For short switch offs, it will switch straight back on.

It is connected to my Sky Q box and I get the same result whether using my Sky Q or the Sony remotes to power up.
Prior to this no problems in 4 years.

The TV is set to auto download the latest software.

I have searched high and low, help needed!!

Who? me 🙂

It was just a thought and something to be aware of. If it was a current sensing lead then it needed eliminating as a possible cause of trouble.

The next step although inconvenient would be to disconnect all external USB leads and see if the TV alone still suffers the problem.

Factory resets... have to be tried but they are often not the cure all they are often assumed to be.

HannahEd01.  Today, whilst watching the TV, the screen went black and the Android reboot started, lasting a minute or so before returning to the channel - that is a first, as all the other occasions have been when switching the TV on from standby.  Anyway that prompted me to do a full factory reset (as suggested by SonyUser30Yrs) , a pain as I had to reset my devices (Sky Q; Roku, remotes, Google Apps and my Sonos Playbar / surround speakers).  I do hope this has solved the problem - I will give it a couple of days of cold starts and update this board.  If this doesn't sort it then I will try and arrange an engineer visit, via my extended TV warranty.

Hi @Axcroft   Just checking that you are now on v6.7205 which is required to fix the problem?

Hi SonyUser30Yrs

No, I'm still on v6.7165.  On the Sony advice page for the continuous rebooting issue, it does not mention v6.7205, but gives guidance on a factory reset, which I have now done.  I am very wary of updating via a USB to the newer version and am inclined to wait for the rollout.  If the factory reset does not solve my problem then I will try and arrange a warranty visit

Hi @Axcroft   As I mentioned in my post (below) mine used to randomly reboot on 6.7165. I had factory reset mine a couple of times and it didn’t fix it.

However the 6.7205 update has been released specifically for “Resolves an issue where the TV randomly restarts”. and so far (fingers crossed) has not happened again to me on 6.7205.

 Hi SonyUser30Yrs

Thanks for that.

Yes, I can see that I will need to get the latest firmware to be assured of a fix.

But I am a little concerned (perhaps too over-cautious!) using the USB method myself, and that should I hit a problem - these things do happen - then my warranty may be invalidated.

The guidance says, in respect to USB updates: "Read the instructions carefully or you could end up causing the TV to become unresponsive or require a repair."

I will keep an eye on it and refer it back to Sony and my warranty provider if it keeps recurring.

Your help on this is much appreciated.

Disclaimers like relating to the USB method are pretty standard tbh. The flip side of the coin is that the TV might actually be updating via the automatic route at some point and you don't notice or go and do something like pulling the plug half way through...

I have auto updating turned off as occasionally manufacturers do get something wrong and big problems follow. Once a release is out in the wild and no one has had major issues is the time I then update manually.

There are no guarantees whatever you do. The USB method gives you more control, you can check the file size is correct (and I've never ever had a download of anything like this have an issue in that regard).

You must do what you are comfortable with however 🙂

I use the USB method each time a new firmware update is released, I find it a more reliable than

trusting a direct update through wifi (flaky) or ethernet (better).

The disclaimer is just that and not proof that it is a dodgy method, there will be a similar disclaimer for

direct over the air downloads.

Follow the instructions carefully for downloading the update and creating the USB, use a good quality USB

not something you picked up at a corporate do or got free for buying 1000 litres of petrol.

Before updating I remove any cables attached to the TV except the aerial, do a full power down.

Unplug the TV from the mains for two minutes.

Reconnect to mains, power up insert the USB in a USB port

(make sure it is the only USB connected to the TV.

Follow the instructions in your TVs menus to install the new software, should only take a few minutes.

Easy as that.

In respect of Sony or your warranty provider they will probably tell you a firmware update is there that fixes the problem and you should install that first to resolve your issue.

I have been checking each morning for the new update and this morning, 6.7205 was available for download via the TV help screen. (Although I have my TV set to auto-download, this, and the last release didn't).

Having read the comments I will use the USB method in future.

6.7205 has now been installed and, together with the full factory reset, I have done all that I can do.  Hoping for a full resolution!

Thanks @LightFoot@Mooly01@SkyNet404 ; @HannahEd01 ; @daveyh64   for those helpful suggestions and comments.
