Reformatted USB stick, now TV won't recognise it

Hi

I've had a Sony Bravia T?V KDL-43WE753 for a bit under a year. I've been using a USB stick to record off the TV. But the USB had some kind of error where it showed there was hardly any space on it. I deleted all the programmes but it still showed only 25 GB free out of 58.

I reformatted the stick on my PC, putting it back to the default settings, but now the TV won't recognise it. The reformatting only gave the option of "NTFS" or "Ex-FAT (default)" under File System, so I chose Ex-FAT. My TV instructions say it's compatable with NTFS, FAT16 and FAT32 but doesnt mention Ex-FAT, so I'm not sure if this is what the problem is.

Is anybody able to help me with this? Thanks.

@jefwatts Glad to hear you solved the problem. FAT32 or NTFS are type of formats for storage devices. The main difference in terms of use between FAT32 and NTFS, is that FAT32 type format has a file size limit of 4GB while there is no such limit in terms of file size for the NTFS type format. You can transfer your media files from any storage device regardless of its type of format to your USB stick and still play them back on your TV.

Now since your USB stick has the NTFS format type, you can copy any files regardless of their size onto your USB stick and play them back on your TV.

Cheers,

Dutchice

Hi @jefwatts,

Welcome to the Sony Online Community!

The recommendation is to have a look at this topic and decide for yourself if you will be able to follow the steps on a Windows PC to fix your USB stick.

Hi jefwatts,

I'd recommend testing a different USB stick to identify the cause of the issue.

I'm not sure if I quite understand the instructions on that thread.

OK, so I followed the isntructions on that thread.

I got to "create partition primary offset=1024"

Then it said this:

DiskPart has referenced an object which is not up-to-date.
Refresh the object by using the RESCAN command.
If the problem persists exit DiskPart, then restart DiskPart or restart the
computer.

DISKPART> create partition primary offset=1024

Virtual Disk Service error:
There is not enough usable space for this operation.

DISKPART> RESCAN

Please wait while DiskPart scans your configuration...

DiskPart has finished scanning your configuration.

DISKPART> create partition primary offset=1024

Virtual Disk Service error:
There is not enough usable space for this operation.

DISKPART> convert mbr

Virtual Disk Service error:
The specified disk is not convertible. CDROMs and DVDs
are examples of disks that are not convertable.

Hi @jefwatts,

I strongly recommend you do not run any further commands on DISKPART when you receive an error. Specially if you have done a rescan. There is a serious danger of entirely wiping out all data on your PC.

You need to immediately exit DISKPART and restart the PC. Then insert the USB stick in the PC. Open the Command Prompt as Administrator. Run the following:

diskpart

press enter, then run the following:

list disk

then take a screenshot of the PC screen and post it here for us. You will require assistance for the following steps. Make sure the full black Command Prompt window (including its borders) is viewable in the screenshot.

A windows message came up saying I need to format the USB before I use it. Should I format it?

@jefwatts Press cancel and proceed further. There is no need to format at this point.
