Slow wired internet on KD 55XD9305

I’ve been using my tv on WiFi since I got it ,but resently the connection. I decided to buy a LAN cable (25m)  so I can put it under the floor.

my ip is bt with the latest bt hub, my internet speed is 76mb max , in reality I get 66mb hardwired to my pc . I used my new LAN cable on my laptop and still get 66mb.

i get 20mb via WiFi and only get anything between 5mb and 17mb wired on the tv .

anyone know why the speed is so slow and erratic?

Hi @Purplemadboy,

Welcome to the Sony Community! I’m not sure exactly what the real problem is that you are trying to solve here. If you are able to give a description of what functions on your TV are not working according to your expectations then perhaps we could look into reasons for that.

In addition I also would recommend you search the topic on the community as there are very helpful posts where you can learn more about the specialised tools/environments required to accurately measure network activity flow on your TV.

Let us know.

Cheers,

Dutchice

I use kodi and amazon prime , occasionally the picture buffers . Also when “surfing “ the net it’s a slow as a week in jail.

With a wired connection I would expect to get around 60mb on the tv.

Thanks for the clarification. With regard to Kodi the buffering might not always be due to a poor network connection. It also very much depends on the type of playback you perform. As a few examples, generally Kodi for AndroidTV is widely known as the least recommended app to use for direct network playback. But it performs fairly better if you stream using DLNA servers on your network and let Kodi playback the stream. Even then, other factors such as the encoding characteristics of your source content have a strong influence on the direct network playback quality. There are quite a number of community users which can answer your specific questions about the use of Kodi in much better detail.

Concerning the buffering of Prime Video on AndroidTV I can assure you that most users if not all have the same type of buffering at certain congestion times. It is very unfortunate but the service delivery solution provided by Amazon is so far, not yet on pair with the robust service quality of their main competitors of the likes of Netflix. And it generally has to do with the choice for software solution architecture they are applying for the AndroidTV platform. Have you already tried to use their app for Android or iOS then cast content from your device to the TV instead?

I also would not recommend using your AndroidTV browser to do casual web surfing. Your TV has been mainly designed to produce the best quality picture from all type of sources. That is and will remain its strongest capability. Yes of course you could also start installing apps and playing games on your TV too but the question you should ask yourself is if the experience matches your other devices which are designed specifically for games. So as much as having a browser on your TV might always come handy at times. You will find it much pleasing to use a different device at home than your TV for browsing. The only point here is that even if the TV was supplied a steady 1 Gb/s rated network speed with under 10 ms latency the browsing experience won’t match your expectations.

Regarding your last comment about the 60 mb/s expectation, again I am totally not aware of the type of tools or environments you are using to measure network speeds. All I can say is that unless you are interested in the software/electronics/network engineering aspects of the TV, those kind of technical measurements which require deep knowledge and understanding of the product is irrelevant. As an end consumer of the TV, it is much more relevant what type of use you are having difficulty with in order to look for solutions that can improve your usage experience.

Hopefully my response is of value for you. We always look forward to hear from our community users.

Cheers,

Dutchice

I understand all the points that you made, but why is the wired internet speed slower than the WiFi (about half the speed)? Being wired it should be faster and more stable .

Hi,

As I mentioned before already I don’t know what are the tools and test environments you have setup and are using. But I’m afraid you are registering wrong readings from what you mentioned. I would drop a post on the xda-developers.com forums if I were you. There are numerous members there that can help you if you are interested to perform such specialised software tests.

Keep us posted!

Im using a Cat 8 Ethernet cable high speed. Have no issues. 72mps is my speed with out vpn with vpn it varies from 50 - 60 mbs. . Maybe your ISP is throttling you broadband. To Test Run A Speed Test without a vpn and again with a vpn of your speed is faster using a vpn then your ISP is throttling you broadband speed. https://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
