Where are iPlayer and ITV hub apps on new A90J 2021 OLEDs?

All the common UK catchup tv apps appear to be missing for the tv and they cannot be installed from google play store.. spec clearly states YouView support and specifically iPlayer.. surely i cant be the only one that has noticed these are not there?!

They are still doing better than LG or Samsung, though. Frightening….

This is the reply I got from Sony. It would help if they were at least more explicit about what the problem is. They knew perfectly well that UK consumers would expect the catch-up services and they have benefitted from the sale of their TVs aware that presence or absence of these services will have been a significant deciding factor for many in the UK on whether to buy a Sony TV. They advertise their TVs, profit from their sale yet remarkably think that they are above UK consumer law. Their arrogance is staggering.

"Thank you for contacting Sony support.
We are sorry to learn about your frustration.

With reference to your enquiry regarding your Sony KD-50X80J, we would like to highlight the catchup streaming apps like BBC iPlayer currently is not available on our BRAVIA TVs. Applications are expected to be available during 2021.

Also, kindly note that your TV is ready for these applications, so there is no fault with the TV. Sony is waiting on an agreement with these providers to be able to make the applications available to you. We hope to make this available as soon as possible.

Regarding your enquiry about the consumer goods Act, please note that these Acts specifically regulate the relationship between yourself and the point of sale.
Therefore, you may contact your point of sales for further assistance regarding this matter as we the manufacturer do not have any interference in the sales matter."

“Waiting on and agreement” is an appalling turn of phrase as it makes Sony appear passive. It’s their TV! they should be ‘actively seeking an agreement’. It really is time Sony engage with and show a commitment to their loyal uk customers. If there is a actual problem with one or more of their service providers, then why can’t they specify which. If there is a legal reason why they can’t tell us, then why can’t they tell us there is a legal reason why they can’t tell us instead of simply saying we can’t give any more details. This lack of transparency is simply unacceptable. I suppose we could try to approach these companies like bbc, 4OD and Google and ask them if they are aware that Sony if implying they are the cause of these delays.

While we all make the casual assumption that any modern smart TV will have the ‘big four’ broadcaster catchup apps, that’s all it is - an assumption.

And not just confined to Sony. I have a couple of 2020 LG TVs, including the flagship GX, that arrived without the ITV Hub and All4 apps (something I did know would happen, which LG said they were addressing, but would not give a timescale for); Curry's kindly threw in a Roku for £10 to provide these. The ITV Hub has since appeared, so LG have partially come good on their promise, but we are still relying on the Rokus for All4.

So you need to check this on any TV you buy - not necessarily physically on the TV, but certainly on the manufacturer’s literature, and/or where applicable, the retailer’s literature.

So can you quote anywhere where Sony claimed they had these apps on their 2021 TVs?

And Sony are quite right that your deal is with, and your remedy is against, the retailer who sold you the product, as per the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

So can you quote anywhere where your retailer claimed that the 2021 Sony TV they sold you, or closely similar 2021 Sony TVs, had these apps?

Perhaps the most interesting reply you could elicit from Sony, though, is whether they will take back the TV on January 1 2022, or sanction returns to retailers from this date, if these catchup apps are still missing?

As certainly, Sony have repeatedly made the claim that these apps should be there this year, and you can certainly claim that you bought the TV on the clear understanding of this.

If they are not prepared to make this commitment, this might enable you, and other affected customers, to judge the likelihood of Sony coming good for you on these apps in 2021.

I can. I took a screenshot of the Sony website, as well as the point of purchase that advertises the apps as being on-board. And when you start the TVs for the first time they're advertised in a HUGE banner ad along the bottom of the screen.

@royabrown2  Do you frequent this forum with the sole intention of antagonising Sony customers? You seem to make apologies for Sony at every turn and it isn't welcome.

I'll find a way to delete my account once my A90J is collected Saturday as I no longer wish to be updated on this thread or any other.

Asked and answered then - fair enough. But I guess that was fairly early this year, before Sony pulled the claims, and many of the people stiffed with these sets researched their purchases and bought them later?

I came to frequent this forum to help people where I can, but sometimes I feel that I need to bring balance to a rather one-sided argument; and as very few people come to the forum to praise Sony, balance tends to go towards Sony’s favour, though God knows Sony don’t deserve it.

I’m sorry if it’s not welcome to you (I presume you speak only for yourself, and don’t claim to speak for the entire forum?)  but I’ll see your “not welcome”  and raise you my ‘Popular’ badge for 100 kudos, so I guess I’m doing something right 😛

It appears, though, that you can insult me at will, whereas my ‘kind salutation’ on your leaving was deemed inappropriate by the people you accuse me of being an apologist for  😛

If this situation is not rectified shortly, I may well be following you out of the door 😢
