How can I convert my Sony clips to work on "iMovie"?

I'm having trouble getting clips from my Sony Camera/Camcorder to work  on iMovie. The file type of the clips are "MPG" and before the number of  each clip it says "M2U". Can anyone help me out?

Which model of camcorder are you using? If you let me know I can have a look to see if there is any camera specific guidance for importing to iMovie.
