“Why fake it when you can create it” is what Frank Doorhof says, and he certainly lives by this statement. The Netherlands-based fashion and celebrity photographer creates sets that are so well-designed and brilliantly fascinating, that he can capture shots with the level of depth and detail you’d only think was possible in post.
Using his expertise to help others, Frank specialises in education, teaching workshops all over the world, appearing at many major photographic trade shows, holding bi-weekly classes for amateurs and professionals, running his informative YouTube channel, and he is the author of the KelbyOne course “Mastering the Model Shoot”.
Here, he talks us through perfecting the light and smoke effects for this stunning shot.
“The shot was taken during a workshop.
I used two LED panels each side, we used some gels for the colour, and on her face, there is a non-gelled light source.
The smoke was added with two smoke machines. We always use two to make sure it’s not just a model, some smoke, and a background, which in my opinion looks fake.
First, we try to fill up the background with the two machines to make it nice and even, and then just before I take the shot, we fill the front just a little bit. You must be fast because if the smoke gets too high, it’s game over!
Also, when using smoke, make sure you light it from the sides and never from the front. Just think about what happens when you turn on the headlights in fog!”
