As a company that made its name through developing ground-breaking audio products and components such as the transistor and the Walkman, we take music very seriously indeed. While you’re bound to be familiar with the Walkman name and some of our more common audio products, you perhaps might not be aware that we have a hand in every single aspect of the music industry.
Let’s start with the recording studio, where some of the biggest musicians and artists in the world have made use of our microphones. The gorgeous C-800G condenser microphone is favoured by many for its smooth vocal sound, and is particularly popular with rappers such as Drake, Eminem and Dr. Dre. In fact, it’s the only microphone that Dr. Dre ever uses for recording vocals of any kind.
The vocals that have been tracked can then be listened back to on our MDR-7520 professional studio headphones. These are used by sound engineers such as Chris Athens and renowned musicians including Mark Knopfler to monitor what’s been recorded and to check for sonic subtleties that might be difficult to pick up on large speakers. Mark Knopfler is such a huge fan that he even uses them outside of the studio for casual listening!
Once the track has been recorded, mixed and mastered, it’s usually released via a record company, of which ours probably doesn’t need any introduction. Since its birth in 1968, Sony Records (which then went on to be Sony Music Entertainment) has put out a baffling number of huge records from artists including Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Daft Punk (to name just a few) through its numerous labels including Columbia, Epic, RCA and Sony Classical.
The only thing left to do once a record has been finalised and released is listen to it, and we provide an almost infinite number of different ways to do so. For the very best quality there are our High-Resolution Audio hi-fi systems which can deliver each track in exceptional quality - much closer to how the artist truly intended it to sound when they were recording it in the studio. Then there’s our headphones, Walkman MP3 players, boomboxes, portable radios and our huge range of wireless speakers that come in all shapes and sizes and are perfect for taking outside this summer to enjoy your favourite records on.
There aren’t many other electronics companies that are able to trace their involvement in the music industry from the studio to your stereo. Whatever the next big innovation in the audio industry might be, you can be sure that we’ll be playing a major part.
